The kebaya is one of the most iconic garments in Malay culture, known for its elegant and distinctive silhouette. Worn by women across Southeast Asia, the kebaya has transcended its traditional roots to become a symbol of modern femininity. Its popularity has been amplified by film stars and stewardesses, turning it into a beloved item of clothing that crosses cultural and racial boundaries. Recognised by UNESCO for its cultural significance, the kebaya represents more than just fashion—it is a testament to the rich heritage and shared identity of the women who wear it.
In a special event held the day before London Fashion Week opens, cultural advocate and designer Oniatta Effendi will give a talk about the fascinating history and significance of the kebaya. The talk will explore the garment's historical origins, tracing its evolution through time and its journey across different cultures. Effendi will also highlight the stories of the women who have worn the kebaya with pride, revealing the deep connections between this garment and the diverse communities it represents. This event offers a unique opportunity to understand the kebaya's enduring legacy and its place in the world of fashion and culture.
